Зола је лепо осликао узвишеност ове француске Венере, као и њене нагле успоне и падове, зауставивши се својим пером на њеном потпуном слому и распаду. Нана је била таква да јој тај крај вероватно не би сметао, јер се, као и многи лепи људи, ужасавала старости и беде. Можемо за њу рећи свашта, и да је проститутка, и да је безобразна, лажљива, похлепна, зла и насилна, али не можемо порећи да је живела живот пуним плућима и да га је једина, од скоро свих ликова, имала у својим рукама. Радила је шта је хтела и на начин на који је желела, не слушајући никога и не покоравајући се никоме. У лику ове жене Зола као да је угурао цео Париз, целу Француску. Нана је заправо цртеж и душа ове земље XIX века, која је лепа баш као њена глатка бела кожа, здрава и плодна као њено тело и њена пламена коса, али са поквареним и злобним друштвом као што је Нанино срце исто тако лоше и труло. Она је дивно ругло од жене, ниједна жена не треба да се угледа на њу, али су одвратни и сви остали ликови који испуњавају странице овог романа. Um livro que mostra a sociedade Parisiense enterrada em vícios e no meio deste drama temos a demi-mondaine Nana, uma atriz que não sabe representar, uma cortesã que conquista e desgraça os homens. Nana é uma jovem tola, passa o tempo todo a se prejudicar, gasta o dinheiro dos amantes como se não houvesse amanhã, até levá-los à falência, é a rainha da sociedade com gostos extravagantes e carros.

One of those bizarre books that glows in spite of itself. Zola's project here is odious, but Nana is ultimately bigger than his plans. Some of the excessive set-pieces are so inspired I walk around thinking about them. While his narrative judgments are half-assed and nauseating, I'm still glad I read it.
After watching The Paradise, I was eager to explore more realms in Zola's world. Unfortunately, I found myself underwhelmed with this slow-paced story about the prostitute Nana. The characters seemed to largely lack depth or complexity. Men were enthralled to the point of madness by the capricious and histrionic Nana. The highlight of the book, to me, was in Nana's tragic death from smallpox at the end.
