If you loved the way, the Mara Dyer trilogy ended and are in a happy place this series may upset that peace. I've come to learn that when it comes to Mara Dyer, nothing is ever at it seems. For me, there were a few threads and questions like that ominous prophecy regarding Mara and Noah left unanswered so, I had to dive in.

I listened to the first series on audio, narrated by Christy Romano, so I didn't even hesitate to go that root this time. The Dyer trilogy was told from Mara's perspective and brief perspectives of Noah. The Becoming of Noah Shaw is narrated by new to me narrator, Joe Jameson. While I appreciated his accent for Noah, I loathed his voice for Mara, and it was jarring to hear these characters with a different voice after becoming used to Romano's interpretation. I was like, who are these people? I understand why the publishers went with a male narrator, but for the listener's sake, I wish they had kept Romano.

The Becoming of Noah Shaw addresses many questions, delves into Noah's Dad, gives us Noah's perspective and shares some rather enlighting and freakish things about Mara. Creepy characters, threats, and danger for them all kept me listening. Threads left unexplored in the first trilogy are addressed, but new questions arise, and we see the flashbacks of events from the first trilogy. We knew Mara was an unreliable narrator but wowzers. I did not see that coming. I will leave you to discover them.

Noah is a complex character with not only baggage but a gift that often feels more like a curse. He's depressed and unsure, and Mara is his anchor. We all know Mara is the anti-hero and Noah will be tested. The story offers a mystery as something is happening to gifted ones. As always Hodkin hooked me, and despite not being thrilled with the narration, I need to know more. Noah has his father's files now, and I just want to sit down and read them all...

For fans of the series, I think you will either love The Becoming of Noah Shaw or hate it. Hodkin can weave a tale and I am curious to see where she takes us. I just hope I survive. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

What I liked about this books:
- Noah's voice
- The story itself is great, and could have been very good
- There is much potential for the characters

What I didn't like:
- It was boring
- I was neither invested nor did I remember what had gone down in the OG trilogy
- How detached I felt of the characters, both main and secondary

This is my second go at reading Noah #1. I wanted to read Reckoning since I am way behind on it, but needed to reread the first because...I couldn’t for the life of me really remembered what happened is the first one and shit I was right. Nothing really happens in the first which is a let down for me. The first time I read it I loved it I devoured it bc it’s Noah duh, but reading it again (now as a writer) I was just taken aback by the lack of plot that left me confused and with so many unanswered questions. So 3 stars. Gonna dive into reckoning now. Godspeed.

This book has been getting mixed reviews, but as a huge fan of the first trilogy, I loved this continuation from Noah’s perspective. The new and returning characters who I both love and love to hate, the wild plot twists, the incredibly intense ending?! So good, and I definitely recommend anyone who enjoyed the first series to read this book as well.

I told myself that I wouldn't get sucked into this series again but guess what I AM okay this rating might change later but rn I'm still so lowkey shook

**Note: You MUST read the Mara Dyer trilogy before this one for anything to make sense. But I wouldn't recommend this spinoff even to fans of the original three books.**

Meh. I loved the Mara Dyer trilogy (especially the first 2 books), but this spinoff was a mess. Although it was a quick read (credit Hodkin for not making her books too dense), there was nothing engaging about the plot. After finishing it, I can't even pinpoint what the plot was. I'm also befuddled by Mara's portrayal in this book; it doesn't align with what we learned about Mara in the initial trilogy. I won't be finishing the rest of this spinoff series.

“Fate is bullshit. Destiny doesn’t exist. If I want a happy ending, I’ll have to write it myself.”

The Becoming of Noah Shaw is a promising reentry into Michelle Hodkin’s world. There’s snarky biting humor and new questions arise as we see old friends. Noah and Mara fight secrets and revelations that threaten to tear them apart.

Things I Liked
I’m always a fan of letters in stories. They instantly add context and history, and in some cases mystery. The letters in this story were definitely used to it’s advantage.

Small thing, but I really liked the chapter titles. I feel like so many books don’t have actual chapter titles or headings, so I appreciate these.

There was an abundance of light-hearted banter that so so so entertaining. It was quick, smart, and biting. It really showed the character’s personality and the dynamics between characters well.

This quote:
“A day may come when I stop being my own worst enemy, but that day is not today.”

Things I Didn’t Like
It took way too long for anything to happen. I feel like we didn’t really get into the plot until around the 40% mark. It was a long slow buildup, that felt long.

The writing style wasn’t really my favorite. There was a notable use of parenthesis that was kinda weird. It didn’t necessarily bother me, but it was something I noticed every time, so it pulled me out of the story. I also thought there was a good bit of telling instead of showing within the story.

This was such an easy book to read. It was filled with unlikeable morally grey characters, fantastic banter, and a vivid well crafted world with a rich history. While I found the first half to be pretty boring, the plot really picked up in the last quarter. The Becoming of Noah Shaw excellently highlights Noah as a character and sets up a great adventure going forward.

I received a copy of the book from Simon & Schuster BFYR via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This book can best be explained by reviewing the texts I was sending a friend while reading.

For hours I sent her amazing screenshots of hilarious and sassy lines.
Me 10:34 "So this has kinda been a relief for me so far???"
Me 10:35 "Not everything is going to shit"
Chloe 10:35 "probably means something terrible is going to happen at the very end LOL"
Me 10:35 "I sure hope not. Pray for me."
Chloe 10:35 "I am actively praying"
Me 10:53 "Hmm"
Me 11:11 "oh fuck"
Me 11:52 "ok well"
Me 11:52 "I'm done"
Chloe "the way you went from hilarious screenshots to 'oh fuck' does not bode well"
