What a superb book!!! I'm not disappointed that all the text is poetry, I'm giddy with happiness about it. This book is many things....a timeline through the past (going waaaaay back), clever poetry of many styles, wonderfully informative and interesting facts, and it's gorgeous to look at! What a great book for kids who like dinosaurs. Highly recommended.

Dinosaurs! And things that came before them! The illustrations are great, and we learn about the subject matter via amusing short poems such as this:

Dunkleosteus
You weren't picky
When it came to diet;
if it lived in the ocean,
you would try it.
Which leads me to raise
this delicate question:
Your face—
the unhappy result
of indigestion?

I would like this book better if the answer to the guessing game was included.

Double-page spreads in an oversized book work perfectly with the subject matter, but the poems are slightly less successful and a little chunky.

The poems for each dinosaur are fun, but the illustrations totally steal the show! The animals come off as SO MASSIVE (which they were, but that's hard to convey through a 16" trim size). I loved the chosen dinosaurs to be featured because they vary so widely in physical appearance. I especially loved "meeting" dinosaurs that weren't featured in my childhood books. The feathered Yutyrannus was my favorite, though Berry was super excited to see the woolly mammoth (mammuthus), which she identified as "Woah. Elephant!". <3

A great picture book, with vibrant photos of the ancient beasties and fun poems for each one. This would be a lot of fun to read with kids -- the large size is just right for a lap or for showing to a group. And the short paragraphs at the end give just a hint of facts for each page.

I really liked the tab at the bottom to help orient the reader in time.

This collection of poems about ancient creatures ranges from the humble Trilobite to the mighty Quetzacoatlus and proves that anything can be poetic. Perfect for dinosaur fans of any age, In the Past includes a geologic timeline and notes for each ancient creature along with realistic mixed media images. The poetry is light-hearted and informative and plays on the illustrations on each page.

"Trilobite

So many of you.
So long ago.
So much above you.
Little below.
Now you lie hidden
deep in a clock,
uncountable ticks
silenced by rock."

What could be more fun for our many young dinosaur fans than this huge book of dinosaur poems, illustrated with mesmerizing dinosaur pictures?

"Arthropleura

The bad news: Like a centipede. Eight feet long. Or more.
The good news: Arthropleura was a herbivore."

See? Clever. Fun. Delightful.
