I feel like I need to reiterate what I said in my review of Haunting Adeline. This book is so insanely dark and shocking that I would not recommend it to someone without knowing how fucked up they are and whether or not they would like to be more. That being said, I really enjoyed this book. It broke my heart, hurt my brain, and left me feeling hallow in the way that I wanted when I decided to read it. I personally think the reunion taking so long made it really great. I definitely cried. I enjoyed reading how Adeline worked through her trauma (even if that in itself caused me trauma).
It is hard to rate Zade as a book boyfriend. He is not a good person - which he openly admits - but he is also so kind to Adeline, but then you go back to thinking about how he forced himself into her life by stalking her for months and then breaking into her home. ITS COMPLICATED!! I saw that the author is going to write Sibby a book and I am very excited (and absolutely terrified) to read that and learn about her even more. Sibby was great comedic relief - and also caused so much concern - that I think her book will be insanely darker and also so heartwarming. WHAT A MIX OF EMOTIONS!
I guess you can judge me for giving this book 5 stars, but I am not opposed to reading it again and I bought them because I had to have them. It did something to me and I will answer for those to God and only God.
Thank you, lol.

This book is frustrating because it's entertaining... But also really screwed up. Like... Really screwed up. I don't recommend it.

I almost didn’t read this because I didn’t like Haunting Adeline that much but I couldn’t stop thinking about that happened at the end of book 1 so I decided I would try to read the sequel and if it was lacking just as much as the first book then I could DNF it (which I have a hard time doing even then I hate a book) but not once during this book did I feel like it was boring or dragging too much nor was I forcing myself to read at any point.

I was enraptured by the plot. It was mainly a thriller with dark romance as a undertone, unlike the first book which was lacking plot and quality writing in my opinion. The sequel exceeded my expectations in plot,  pacing and quality of writing.

I saw someone saying that this book relies on shock value? I disagree heavily.  I personally think it was almost too watered down for the real horrors of
sex trafficking
but I’m really glad Carlton didn’t make it any worse and more graphic than it already was.

Zade’s character arc, his patience and softening towards Addie in this book due to her trauma is everything to me. I did not like him in the first book and I didn’t care much for Addie either in the first one, but this one changed all of that. Additionally, Addie’s character development to a morally gray character in response to her
trauma—she took her power back in order to begin to heal and it made her a much darker more badass and inspiring character. Her fighting against that darkness within her at first but ultimately deciding to give into it was satisfying

I’m curious to see if Carlton is going to write a spin off duology with
Kraven and Sibby’s disappearance and their quick, mysterious encounter at the end. Also having Rio’s handwritten letter to Addie on the final page is so much more than I could’ve ever asked for. It ended the book perfectly for me. I figured we weren’t going to acknowledge him again and basically just have us assume that he and Addie will never communicate or cross paths again—which bummed me out because I really really liked Rio in a complicated way due to his character being morally gray but in time doing the right things to the best of his ability  in such an awful situation they both were in and then making the ultimate sacrifice in getting Addie out of the traffickers house. So for a majority of the book I was unhappily accepting that we wouldn’t get more from his character
but I’m SO glad we got something regardless how minimal it was.

Make sure to read the TW before starting though which are included in the book. It is extremely dark, like leaps and bounds more dark and horrific than Haunting Adeline. Book 1 looks like a children bedtime story compared to this one.

TLDR; if you didn’t like the first book much and are questioning on whether to give the second one a chance—I HIGHLY recommend you continue and read the sequel just to give it a chance.
