Haven't read the novels yet. Maybe later.
Liked it very much as a graphic novel

I was honestly, and sadly, disappointed by this story. I think the real novel could be interesting but to me, this story in graphic novel format wasn't the most interesting. The characters were interesting and the story also seemed to hold some kind of interest yet the story was slow-paced and there was too less in this book to make it entirely interesting.

I"m sorry, Artemis Fowl, you're just not my cup of tea.

I was initially recommended this book over ten years ago by a friend who knew I loved Harry Potter series, but funnily enough I only got to read it now. I believe that had I read it all those years back I might've enjoyed it better, but at the moments, I have very mixed feelings.

What I loved was the fantasy part of the book and the worldbuilding. The fairies and their world were fun and well created, even though some parts were ridicoulous. Sadly, I couldn't bring myself to like or sympathise with the main character, Artemis. He came off as really conceited and annoying to me.

However, my biggest objection is towards the very basis for the whole story and how the author portrayed death and violence in it. I believe it won't be much of a spoiler, because it's stated at the very beginning of the book but the reason why Artemis wants to kidnap a fairy is because he wants the fairies to give him gold, which he believes will fix all of his and his family's problems. I really disagree with this way of thinking and it's too bad that the idea isn't showed as bad in the end. Money definitely can't fix everything and children reading it shouldn't think that. In addition, I was very surprised when I saw how lightly the author treats such serious subject as death. There were scenes where the violence and character's death were showed as if nothing unusual happened (and I'm talking about the human characters here) and it didn't sit right with me, especially considering that it's a children's book.

I read the Artemis Fowl books years ago but I've recently wanted revisit the world and I saw this version of the story on KU and really enjoyed it. It was a really good adaption I do suggest a good chunk of time away from the books before reading this though

I didn't read the novel version, so I have nothing to compare and contrast it with, but I thought it was really cool and a great story!

I read the 4-5 of the original books as a kid and LOVED them. I think they might have been my 'gateway' to the fantasy/supernatural genre. As an adult, I enjoyed this book for the memories of the original books, but I couldn't enjoy the graphic novel adaptation itself.

To be fair, I think it would've been hard to build a complete world-building experience in a single volume, on top of telling the first book's story. But I felt like I wouldn't have been able to understand the plot/world of this book as a kid, without having previously read the original books for context.

I think my younger self would have also been put off by the artistic direction chosen for this adaptation. The first adjective that came to mind was "grotesque".

Over a decade later, I still plan to return and finish the original series. But I won't be continuing the graphic novel series.
