Another Kindle Unlimited book. I really enjoyed the stories of the patients and how much they overcame. But the author irritated me quite a bit and I found myself skimming parts that were not specifically about her patients.

Really fascinating. I loved this book.

1 ⭐️. I rarely give out such low ratings. This books shares 5 stories of “heroic emotional recoveries”, which really is just a mask for the author patting herself on the back while exploiting the harrowing traumas of her clients with outdated therapy practices and harmful stereotypes and ideologies that are explained by, “well it was the 80s” -ick. The first two stories are tough but still manage to give hope to the reader, that after such a tough life there is a way out. Then comes Daniel’s story, she admits several times that language is outdated and some things she does and says are not great yet continues to use them and glorify this treatment. She also NEVER got his permission to use this story since he has since passed on. Then the 4th story caused me to really hate this book. It was obscene the way she described the sexual torture of this child and says she won’t get into it and continues to get into it. The glorification of these client’s trauma was disgusting. I am not a sensitive reader in the slightest and it felt truly horrifying to know that the therapist is making money off these stories and barely gets their approval to do so. This book feels like she exploited her clients for shock and awe and I hate it. I could barely finish at 80% - PASS!

This book was incredible, I really love hearing people’s stories and getting the psychological interpretations from the therapist. People never fail to amaze me and I learned so much while simultaneously being inspired. It was heartbreaking but also uplifting to hear the growth that each patient went though.
