So interesting to hear from the therapist's side of seeing a client for many years. I feel like she picked the 5 perfect clients to write about.

Best part about this book is learning about the patients after therapy life. It was the only way to keep going after the horrifying childhood abuse. I don’t know anything about her therapy tactics and what’s right and wrong, but I do think she did the best she could in these cases. I did find it hard to keep going and read on as I thought the stories got worse and worse. The last story is a little bit of a palette cleanse since there was not sexual abuse but still this book deserves warning for people who cannot take horrifying stories. I wish I could go back in time and rescue these children.
I can’t imagine the average reader relating to any of the case studies in this book. I was hoping for something along the lines of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, but it felt more like rubbernecking at a car accident the whole time. I mean, the case studies were totally fascinating and the author is a brilliant therapist, but I can’t say I felt good after reading them.

a read that i had to pause a while between each therapy stories just to reel and feel the myriad of emotions from what the clients have been through. it amazes me how each individual fought their deep-seated psychological issues in their own courageous ways, which really resonated with me when dr gildner herself calls all 5 of them heroes, in their own lived experiences and battles. some of the recounts were so heavy due to the abuse involved.
literally so insightful! I enjoyed hearing about therapy from the therapist's pov. I feel like this is a book that I will make connections to and reference in everyday life. (ofc huge tw in many ways)
