Definitely better than the movie and actually beter than the first book, I thought. Didn't feel like just a connecting book ina trilogy but almost a book of its own right.

Fantastic sequel - this series is amazingly eerie but the strength of the children's friendship also brings light and enjoyment to the novel. The twist near the end of the book was brilliantly done and upon reflection I should have seen it coming. Riggs' addition of the peculiar animals and new loops was superb and really allows the reader to further explore this peculiar world that the author has so thoughtfully created. As well as this the time period that the children are mainly in throughout this novel is the Second World War which creates a fantastic backdrop to the building battle between the Wights/Hollows versus the other peculiars and their ymbrynes.

After the first book was absolutely amazing, I'm not surprised that this second book was too. I'm still really impressed by the way Riggs managed to write a story and include the pictures he found into it/wrote the story around the pictures, and the setting, characters, world in general and story was once again really convincing.
At times it didn't feel quite as important to me, maybe because there wasn't a home anymore that was at stake, but also there was a lot more action and suspense, and I did enjoy that. It just didn't feel quite as creepy anymore, and I will admit that I missed that a little (even though I don't actually like horror).
The end was pretty surprising and really stong in my opinion, but also I'm not exactly convinced with some of the stuff Jacob did. It felt for me a little  like he only did the stuff because the plot needed him to, so there would be the exact outcome that would work with what happened next, and I feel like that whole thing was a little forced.
If it wasn't for that the book would have easily matched up to the first one. Like this, I'm sadly not quite as convinced, even though I did really like where the situation ended, I just also can't get over the fact that in my opinion that would have never happened naturally.

Liked it even more than the first one! Can't wait to read the 3rd.

The book somewhat dragged a bit, but I definitely fell in love with the characters a lot more in this book (I really wish we could have longer sections dedicated to characters like Bronwyn or Millard, but I suppose I'll have to see in the next books). The plot twist at the end definitely brought the rating of the book up and really made me want to pick up the next one.
