After reading the new Ransom Riggs Release, Sunderworld #1 and being disappointed, I was apprehensive about going into this one, even though I remember enjoying the first peculiar's book, its been a few years since I read it. What if the writing and plot wasn't as good as I remembered? If it was anything like his newest release it wouldn't be. Thankfully it was as good as I remember! I listened to the audiobook and followed and along physically and just had a great time. Fantastic sequel and don't even get me started on that ending! Like whatttt?!! So good and I will be reading the next book immediately.

More adventurous than the last one. I wish he'd read a bit more British English from the 1940s or spoken to older people as the only Britishism they all use is "kilometers" which they wouldn't have used. You get to know the characters as people rather than just based on their peculiarities in this one. Exciting from beginning to end - and what an ending!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THAT ENDING.
This book was so much better than the first in my opinion. I know a lot of people were unsure if they should continue but YOU HAVE TO.

As with almost every second book in a trilogy I found it a bit slow, at least the first maybe 100 pages. I'm starting to believe that it's probably just in my head, maybe I'm a bit fed up with the story when I begin reading book #2 in a series.
Hollow City grew on me though and I really like it. I don't think the photos are as spot on as in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and thus I skip a lot of them or just take a glance before continue reading. The development of the characters is really uneven. While Emma and Jacob are really worked on and their characters deepen, Olive and Horace are almost left out completely. You know they are there because of some comments and Olives levitation and so on, but they get almost as little attention as any of the new subordinate characters that has a part for only a few chapters. This is unfortunate since Horace could have had such a massive impact with his abilities. Plus, I really like Horace's a bit eccentric treats.
Riggs has tried to really include every gender and give them abilities that aren't gendered but unfortunately there are a lot of boys rescuing girls. And even though Emma, clearly, is the leader, Jacob ultimately has to save her and that bugs me.
All and all, it gets 4 star out of 5. More evenly developed characters and no boy being the savior would have gotten it 5 stars.

Spoiler
Why doesn't Riggs make more out of his foresightedness (is that even a word?)? Why haven't he learnt to control his ability and use it to their advantage?Riggs has tried to really include every gender and give them abilities that aren't gendered but unfortunately there are a lot of boys rescuing girls. I think I liked this one more than the first book, but there is a lot of unfinished business. how many books are in this series anyway? too much more and I will give up on it.
