Very beautifully written, stunning really. Given my druthers, I'd have cut the main story out of the plot. I found it uninteresting and in the end, seemed only pertinent to tying the other stories together. Sans-tightrope-walker I'd have given this a definitive five stars.
I almost gave up on this, but I am glad that I stuck with it. There are many characters/narrators (and on the audio book, each were voiced by a different reader) and it took me a while to figure out how it all came together - or didn't. There were similarities with the other McCann book I have read, but I preferred Transatlantic. At times, I felt there was too much repetition or maybe I just missed the point of it (and I admit there were parts that I skipped). But parts were simply fascinating - the character, their story, the words. I loved the friendship between Clair and Gloria, how it grew and apparently flourished.
The next Colum McCann book I read will be print, not audio. I want to savor it.

It's completely depressing but also completely beautiful. I kept hoping something good would happen to the characters, but I wanted to keep reading even when it didn't. I suppose it's typically Irish in that way. Definitely a worthy read!

McCann’s ability to write from a variety of perspectives and positions in time so successfully is amazing. Would recommend
Another book where I wish we could give half stars. If we could, it would be a 3.5
A friend suggested this book and as a vicarious New Yorker I immediately picked it up from the library. It was a slow burn at first where it felt like a series of disconnected short stories. But a quarter of the way in the intricacies of the story began to reveal themselves. From the women of the streets, to park avenue to the rural country of New York State. So many folks that seem completely unrelated lives intersect in beautiful ways. There’s artists, prostitutes, a grieving group of mothers and a tight rope walker.
історія про переплутані людські стежки і про неймовірно різні сприйняття тих самих подій. хороша історія.
Nicely structured but seemed to go on short tangents from time to time.
