Anyabwile presents in this book three African-American pastors from history, each exemplifying a virtue every preacher needs. Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833) inculcates the need for ministers to have the second advent in their minds at all times as they shepherd the flock of God. Daniel A. Payne (1811-1893) extols the need for the education of both pastors and congregants so that the standards for preaching might be raised higher. Francis Grimke (1850-1937) demonstrates the importance of keeping the gospel at the center of the church's life and practice, applying it to all things from individual salvation to institutional racism.
The book isn't in all places a page-turner, but it's worth reading. It serves to correct many harmful and unfortunate ideas floating around in American Christianity today.
