I understand why people gave Sybella her flowers back in the day; she's a stronger character than Ismae in which that her prickly nature, pessimism, and trauma feel more fleshed out. Her background in speckled throughout the book rather than completely stated in the introductory chapter, and her motives and perspectives on life feel justified with each layer that is sloughed off. Her romance with The Beast is also very cute!

I just couldn’t bring myself to care much about the story or the characters.

I can't believe I read this as a kid with the amount of incest in it. I am amazed I was able to stomach how much incest was in this time around too.

Dark Triumph starts about where Grave Mercy leaves off. This time we get to follow Sybella and her adventures. Sybella, another strong female lead, has a very dark past to recover from. There are so many twists and turns that it can be dizzying. Her life is one constant betrayal, but she overcomes it well. I found myself gasping at some of the plot twists. In this story we get to learn more not only about Sybella, but also Beast. We also get to encounter more of the 9 Saints and their abbesses. One thing that I'm loving about Robin LaFevers is that her characters aren't perfect. She's given them so much history, flaws, and obstacles to overcome that it's hard to not be captivated. Well done. Can't wait to read Mortal heart.

I thought this was the strongest book of the series.

I didn't enjoy Sybella's story quite as much as Ismae's but I did find her back story to be more endearing. This was a very well-done continuation of the overall plot points from the first book and I enjoyed how some of the other minor characters we met in book one were expanded upon more.
