The Last Word

This book was everything I needed!

I adored Beach Read and enjoyed Hating Game, so I knew going in that I would most likely enjoy it, and I did. Workplace romances are to die for, and this one is no exception. Enemies, Harper is mad when Ryan is hired at her job. Forced together, they bicker and fight, and dang, I'm obsessed.

This book was really good. Harper felt a little immature at times, but I loved the dynamic between Harper and Ryan, and their chemistry was off the charts. They are total opposites, which I like reading love interests like that. I really enjoyed this and recommend it 100%!

Book #89 read in 2023

This was a fun enemies to lovers office romantic comedy. I love the banter between Harper and Ryan, but also felt the chemistry almost immediately. I really enjoy Katy Birchall's writing style.

Thank you to St. Martin's Griffin and Netgalley for the complimentary ebook.

Celebrity journalist Harper Jenkins has a reputation for establishing strong connections with A list stars. Now if only she could make her curmudgeonly boss understand her worth, she’d be golden. Instead, she finds she’s often having to prove herself at pitch meetings, her ideas falling on deaf ears.

Things go from bad to worse when her boss hires her old nemesis, Ryan as the new Features Editor. As if his being the new clear favorite isn’t bad enough, the two are constantly at each other’s throats, the details of their deep seated feud known only to the two of them. While interning together years prior, their attraction blossomed into something more. But a falling out brought them back to square one, they’re not so simmering tension now just waiting to boil over.

Forced to spend more time together, Harper and Ryan have a harder and harder time fighting their unresolved feelings for one another. But can Harper trust her gut or is history doomed to repeat itself like last time?

The Last Word is the first book I’ve read by @katybirchallauthor and I’m honestly surprised why I haven’t seen more love for it (or her). Marketed for fans of The Hating Game, I found the comparison to be true. Also, this book had the unfortunate timing of coming out the same time as the thriller, The Last Word. To be clear, they are VERY different stories, but I digress.

While I loved the banter between Harper and Ryan, what really got me fuming was the unequal treatment of the two in the workplace, due to a chauvinistic boss. I only worked in an office setting for a short period of time, but sadly more often than than not, this is an ideology that still permeates office culture.

The Last Word is a smart romance that definitely will not be the last words I read by this author.

i'm all about a second chance romance, give me all the pining and angst!

Harper gave me Elizabeth Bennett vibes, having already formed her opinion of ryan 12 years prior when they were interns together and not really seeing him in any other light after everything that happened between them. when they are working side by side again years later sparks are bound to fly! I loved the banter but not the bickering so much.

i really rooted for them throughout the book and i loved that it showed harper's evolution and growth as well as the romance plot.

this is my first Katy Birchall book but it won't be my last!

thank you to netgalley and st martins press for an opportunity to love this book!

I’ve said it once I’ll say it again.
Book Lovers meets The Spanish Love Deception meets The Hating Game

-EXTREME slow burn
-enemies to lovers
-second chance

This book took by surprise. I absolutely love every single second! The tension, the banter, the characters, everything!

Harper is literally a walking tornado (in the best way). She is organized chaos and I love her unapologetic manor. And Ryan is me near freak strait laced hard worker. Natural born enemies.

And gosh Ryan just does the sweetest things and you can see their banter but the care!! This is a second chance romance and the timeline was written really when in there sense that nothing was given away. But there were some too-fast paced movements in the present timeline that could have been slowed down to provide useful tension in the story. As well as at the end I NEEDED some more grovelling. Something hard hitting and sweet bc Ryan and Harper would be the type!

But overall I absolutely love every second of this!

Also an absolute sucker for women’s fiction

Loved the premise and characters. Really enjoyed Ryan and Harpers banter. Not usually a fan of flashback chapters but these were quick and enjoyable.

This book was cute and fun to read! I love a romance novel that gives equal weight to the romance AND the main character’s personal growth- typically, the latter feels like an afterthought. The characters in this book felt real and believable, and it was hard not to love and root for them. Recommended if you liked Beach Read but wished it were more British.
Thanks to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy!
