Inhalt: Lucas kommt auf die kleine Insel, auf der Cait mit ihrer Familie lebt. Einfach so. Niemand weiß wer er ist, noch wo er her kommt oder was er überhaupt dort will. Cait wird von dem geheimnissvollen und interessanten Lucas angezogen und lernt ihn bei einem Spaziergang kennen. Sie hat ihn sofort gern, weil er einfach anders ist. Er sieht toll aus, ist dabei aber nicht arrogant. Und er lebt total zurückgezogen im Wald. Dieses Unwissen gefällt den Anwohnern der Insel natürlich nicht - das unbekannte bedeutet Gefahr.
Lucas hat keine Angst anders zu sein und seine Meinung zu sagen. Er wird im Buch mit einem Tier verglichen; wenn er sich oder jemanden, den er gern hat (in diesem Fall Cait), beschützen muss, bekommt er einen emotionslosen Blick und ist kaum zu stoppen, wenn er auf jemanden losgeht. Das muss aber so sein, wenn man in der "Wildnis" und auf sich allein gestellt lebt.
Das gefällt den Insel Bewohnern natürlich noch weniger und sie wollen ihn loswerden.

Zuerst hatte ich ein bisschen Angst, das Buch zu lesen. Es hat nämlich den "Deutschen Jugendliteratur Preis" bekommen und ich hab befürchtet, dass es für mich zu viel Niveau hat. *g*
Das Buch hat mir aber echt gut gefallen! Die Charaktere sind mir sehr sympathisch, vorallem Cait, Lucas und Caits Bruder Dominic. Die meiste Zeit des Buches ist er zwar oberflächlich und gemein, das liegt aber nur am Einfluss seiner "Freunde". Später sieht er ein, wie blöd er sich verhalten hat, entschuldigt sich und ist echt nett.

Lucas is exactly the sort of magical boy from my teenage dreams... well, apart from the last thing he does - which remains unexplained and is so totally out of character (in my opinion, at least) that it sort of ruins the book to me (though ruins is too strong a word here, but I can't think of anything else).

Despite the bad writing style and the neverending repetitions of words, sentences even (at the end of the book for example) I kept on reading and after a couple of chapters I was completely sucked in and ended up reading the it all in one sitting. I'm disapointed that there wasn't more information about Lucas, I know it didn't matter, that this book was adressing other issues, like ignorance, but they made a big mistery out of him and I'm just not satisfied with the ending. On the other hand, I must admit that the book was very cleverly written. It was a quick read, and there were beautiful moments, things that really resonated with me. So not so bad after all.

Lucas is one of the first books I read when I moved to England and one of the only books that have stayed with me, year in and year out, to this day. I lost my copy in the final move we made four years ago, but today, I found a copy at the market!
