We were looking for books about princesses for Zenobia (who turns 5 tomorrow!), and I looked vaguely elsewhere (yes, I admit I don't care overly much for princess-type books, though I'm doing my best to support her and am currently pondering how to turn it into a school subject that helps us cover arithmetic and reading and social studies, etc.) and found this book on Maths. So I grabbed it, and the once next to it (and yes, we found a couple of nice princess books as well).

Stuart J. Murphy has written a large range of picture books that highlight math concepts through story. This nice little story has 3 children cleaning up their local park in advance of the Earth Day celebration to be held there, and wanting to plant flowers at the entrance. How can they raise the money? They collect aluminium cans for recycling. This, of course, involves all sorts of ideas of how to do that to the best advantage, and involves much counting and Place Value.

It's all very nicely done - happy illustrations, a good text, and a great combination of conservation and mathematics. James (who'll be 7 in September) isn't quite at the level for this maths yet, but I've made note of the book and will definitely be borrowing it again.

Loved this book!

Really more about math than Earth Day, which made the book not fit what I needed for the day.
