I don’t say this very often in this age of massively decompressed books, but I actually wish this had been longer and had a bit more room to breathe. It was good, but if it had been 6 issues rather than 4, I think it could have been great.

Imagine Conan, but he ends up in NYC, sort of. But don't imagine the movie where exactly that happens. Imagine a different movie from that movie but where the basic outline is the same. Or just imagine a different movie altogether. One like Demolition Man. It's fun to imagine Demolition Man, even if it's identical to the movie that ended up being Demolition Man that you end up imagining.

I understand what Lemire was trying to do, and it's very "Moorlock meets new age guru", but it just fell flat for me. I had no real love for either protagonist, or either setting.

I think I would have preferred to see more fish out of water scenes, either barbarian in society or vagrant in sword and sorcery land. I also would have wanted to fall in love with either setting or either character - they just felt derivative, both of them?

The art was just okay. To be fair, I don't love classic Conan art like some do, and generally don't vibe with comic art that includes overly detailed musculature.

Ultimately, it felt like a prequel. If I had read other stories about the characters in their sword and sorcery setting, I think I would have been more invested in them here. Instead, there wasn't enough development to drive my love for them, and we never saw any character really "shine".

It's not a bad book, I guess, but I was expecting more from Lemire. Or maybe just...something else. Something a little less basic. On the other hand Deodato and Martin do an incredible job with the art and design on the book. It's beautiful and quite visceral in places. The story of a Barbarian King sent to the modern world feels a lot like the plot of the movie He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. So it's got that going for it.

The art was very good for the style of story being told. The story was... fine? Unsure if there is anything else coming after this.

I've read Black Hammer prior and i am beginning to see a pattern. Jeff Lemire has ideas but he seems to have trouble making stories out of them. The writing is very weak. He is prolific so i wonder if all his work has a good baseline with very thin development. I still have Descender that I own, to read (and a black hammer spinoff). So I'll give him 3 chances before I write him off

This was a solid comic overall. It felt like it went by too fast, but I enjoyed the humor and the genuine characters. The page layouts were excellent, even though some individual panels looked sloppy. I can see why some people disliked it, but it connected with me.

Artwork is interesting, story is ok but not particularly meaningful. It doesn't really do much with the fact that this barbarian warrior is in the modern world. Spends most of the time in the woods/park. Seems like a missed opportunity.
