Frances Welty, a romance author, has signed up for a health retreat at Tranquillium House. She joins eight other people who have also come to improve or fix something in their life; but the resort owner, Masha Dmitrichenko, will do anything to help her clients transform their lives. As the nine strangers embark on their ten day journey, they notice that the activities meant to help them heal become more intense and more stressful and possibly even deadly. The strangers quickly become allies as they try to understand Masha's path to healing.

Very engaging; but also a little contrived.

I always love Liane Moriarty's books, I do not think there has been one yet that I haven't liked. The setting of this book was strange and bizarre but the characters were likable. I always love that she does different POVs throughout the book which helps piece the whole story together.

I have mixed feelings about this one. it was an interesting story, I loved the characters and their development, but I just didn’t feel the thrill. Maybe it’s the format I read it in, but even when the characters were at seemingly imminent risk of death, I wasn’t convinced death was a possibility.
I really resonated with some of the themes of sibling loss, anxiety/depression, and self love, so those were redeeming for me. It was fairly funny to me as well.

Nine Perfect Strangers is about nine people who go to a resort in the Australian countryside and they are promised a transformative experience. They all have different reasons for being there and throughout the novel, we find out who they are and why they are in need of this experience.

From the beginning, I was really into it. I was excited about it. And then more and more characters were introduced. Guests + staff = 13 people to keep track of. That’s too many people. There were points that I forgot a character existed and then they would pop up.

The book is a smidge too long and I say that because the last six chapters were an epilogue. There were too many characters for me to buy in enough with them to care about what happened to them. With the exception of Frances.

The writing was good. 452 pages went pretty quickly. The interactions between the characters were quite fun. The assumptions they had about each other were ridiculous and seemed to show us we aren’t all we appear to be. Which is a theme throughout the book.

It seems like the characters themselves are part of various reveals so I won’t go through them in this review however this book would have been better off with fewer guests for the reader to get to know.

Diversity was nonexistent in this book. There is one man, staff, who I assume is Chinese, Yao, but that’s it.

The twist is both confusing and interesting. Confusing because I was like...what is happening and interesting because I was latched in so I could figure out what’s happening.

So overall, I’d give it a 3-star rating. The ending just wouldn’t end and the twist was jarring, considering the otherwise calm cadence of the book.
