I read this book twice as a kid before I realized it was a biographical novel. It's still a fun read, and there's a bit of nostalgia attached to it (in part because of the 1950s and 2003 movies that I watched after reading it the first time), but it is not without flaws - I noticed upon another reread when I was older that there was casual racism and the more controlling flavor of misogyny that is unfortunately true to form for the decades that the kids were raised in. I'm not going to remove any stars for it being an account of what happened, but other readers probably would want to be aware going into it.
