I would make sure to look at the content warnings listed. A lot of sexual assault and pedophilia that I had to put it down.

This book is the queerest piece of literature I’ve ever read — reminding us of the limitations of language and Western ideas of gender and sexuality, and of the Nature’s inherent queerness. This book also challenges our understandings of the monstrous and the grotesque, with horror as a lens for queer and disabled commentary, and explored queer sex, intimacy, and pleasure in such novel and fascinating ways I’m still reeling. It is also a scathing critique of structural and interpersonal racism, anti-Blackness, and settler-colonial violence of the US. Absolutely incredible!

This was almost a 5 star read for me (I’m a heathen and don’t do half stars). This book is SO inventive and creative. Solomon is an incredible author and I can’t wait to read everything they write. Until the last 50 or so pages I was so invested and couldn’t wait to keep reading, but the last act really felt rushed - it needed a sequel at the very least I feel like to really flesh out the ending. Solomon clearly has bones to pick with colonization, racism, and specifically the systemic oppressions in our government - but I love that they make it a story of adversity in spite of it all. They also make it a story that while revolves around criticisms, isn’t overwhelmed by them.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes sci-fi/fantasy that pushes the genre.

I have never read a book like this. I have been wanting to get into more eerie books and this totally scratched that itch for me. If you are a fan of spooky but not horror this is definitely for you. There is a lot of gore and body horror stuff that left me thoroughly unsettled. It reminded me of “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. The whole story was dark and brooding with little flecks of hope and the writing made the characters and setting come to life.

This is a wonderful book that I would encourage everyone to read in small parts. It deserves to be enjoyed slowly. There is violence but the violence is paramount to the story, even when it’s visceral and upsetting. A book I could read again and again and always take away something new.

This was a very raw, very honest book that absolutley did not shy away from tough topics. I loved the characters. The first 3/4 were amazing, but unfortunately the last quarter of the book went in a direction that was much less of my thing and I enjoyed it a lot less. Overall though, very good.
