Hill House + Lovecraft + possibly faint vibes of Rebecca? Pretty good. Kinda want a sequel, doubt I’ll get one.

Mira Grant channeling Lovecraft (without the sexism and racism)? What's not to love?

liked the gay YA scooby doo ness of it all and the found family but didn’t really care much for the actual horror (lovecraftian attempt) and the predictable plot

Harlowe, Kevin, Andy, and Addison have been Buffyesque Scoobies since middle school. Now approaching their 20s and responsible adulthood, they take a chance at one big payout of a mystery score at the haunted Spindrift House. As soon as they arrive, weird stuff connected to the sea starts happening (of course).

I don't know about this one. The prologue chapter was amazing, setting up the potential for a fabulous haunted house story. The change in tone when we meet the Scoobies was jarring, but I adjusted. However, the rest of the story had cool moments and meh moments. I think the parts of this story ended up being better than the whole.

Mira Grant wrote Into the Drowning Deep, a scary mermaid book I read last year that was absolutely phenomenal. She also writes the Wayward Children series under the name Seanan Maguire and those stories are very highly recommended as well.
