I dont know. It was like reading a grimm fairy tale that was a little too long. It was kinda cool, but I mostly feel eh about it. Its not a bad book, I just dont think it was for me. It wasn't scary at all, it was a little boring and repetitive, somethings were not clear.. missed potential I guess.

An unnamed Puritan woman goes into the woods to collect berries for her husband and son and gets lost in a dreamlike sequence of horror and mystery.

Okay. Hm. This was an odd one, and a bit frustrating too. I really liked the prose, and I felt like the story was grasping for something that could’ve been really good. However, that goal remained just a bit out of reach. It was lyrical, sure, but to what end? I don’t mind confusing or murky stories, but it felt like Hunt didn’t know what he was going for until an editor said “wrap it up,” and then he wrapped it up in the last few chapters too quickly and without the grace of the rest of the prose. Information about the main character in particular could’ve been dripped out at a more steady pace, rather than heaped on us at the end. The imagery was great, and I thought Hunt did a wonderful job visually describing things that are fantastical or difficult to imagine, but overall it felt a lot like a dream. Messy, scary, with lots of interesting ideas, but difficult to describe upon waking. 2.5 out of 5 screams.
