While the art is beautifully intricate and the story is intriguing, this series is just flat too gory for my taste so I read this super, super slowly.

What I liked:
-The artwork
-Master Ren/the cat characters
-The majority of the characters (main and side) were all female

What I didn’t like:
-I felt like there wasn’t much information about the world or plot given so I was confused a lot and near the end there’s a map and diagram which would’ve been much more helpful if it were placed at the beginning.
-the dialogue felt too long and i think this would’ve been better as a novel with certain scenes beautifully illustrated. There were some violent or scary looking scenes I would’ve preferred not to see (creepy faces give me the heebie jeebies)
- some of the characters looked alike so it was hard to discern who was who at times

I got a copy of this book via Netgalley for free in an exchange for an honest review!

Monstress Volume 1: Awakening caught my eyes because of the sentence "Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900's Asia", and also because of the astonishing artwork that Sana Takeda did.
Sadly I didn't see a lot of historical references but I should had expected since it clearly says alternate. Despite that, the artwork was beautiful and I couldn't love it more!

I am not the biggest fan of graphic novels because, in my opinion, they usually lack in the world building department and I never truly relate with the characters.
With that said, Monstress Vol.1 was a bit of a disappointment but also a good surprise.

A bit on the gory side, but an intriguing story, if a tad confusing

intriguing storytelling, impeccable artistry, one of the most beautiful sci-fi fantasy graphic novels I've read.
