The little girl in this book has to be the mos annoying character I've encountered in a book.

I've only read other Crichton's book, Timeline, and I liked that one very much. The problem I have with his books, and probably has to do with me not being used to this genre, is that they took too much time to actually show that something is happening. The first 50-70 pages of the book were blehg for me. It was not until around page 150 that I was starting to feel interested. And that taking into account that I haven't seen any of the movies.

Should I read the second part or do I just marathon the movies?

Jurassic Park is a classic for a reason, and the movie did a brilliant job of taking 80% of the story and presenting it in a way that audiences lapped it up. The book is significantly more graphically violent, and multiple deaths featured in the movie are further gruesomely detailed within these pages. The novel itself is solidly written and incredibly well researched and fleshed out, and the characters and events are tense and driven.

If only they had kept the original ending and Jeff Goldblum's character had died. We would have been spared his performance in JP II.

Loved this book! I'm glad I read "The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs" before reading Jurassic Park so that I was able to understand more of the Jurassic terminology. The characters really came to life in the book and I had a greater understanding of the park, the dinosaurs, the characters, and the motivation behind Dennis Nedry's fatal decision to steal the embryos. The only part of the book that I didn't enjoy was how annoying Lex was, she was much more of a likable character in the movie adaptation.

I have seen the film and always thought Dennis Nidry caused the downfall of the park, but reading the book and like most real life accidents there is no one cause its a cascade of errors.

And that stems from John Hamonds nievity, scientists mistaken they can control dinosaurs.  This book is one of the authors best.
