Every person mentioned in the psych ward is a woman. Every description of a woman is pretty crude and demeaning. Including calling an overweight woman “grotesque” and many times other women “bitch”. Alicia’s main personality traits are sitting in a coffee shop, having sex with her husband, and thinking about how great he is (even painting him as JESUS). This is a brilliant example of fiction that you can tell was written by a man because of the inherent misogyny. 

There are many characters that are brought up that are never addressed. For example the Gabriel’s brother, who assaults Alicia, is just brushed over completely. Theo seems like an awful psychotherapist and had drastic changes in character from chapter to chapter but I guess that’s the point. Interesting premise with good execution and an unexpected ending. I would recommend it to someone who likes psychological thrillers more than I and someone whose mother isn’t a psychotherapist so they can overlook the malpractice.

This book was interesting to say the least. I had already been spoiled for the twist but I was still able to somewhat enjoy the story.

One of my issues was that since I knew the twist it was hard to be sympathetic to Theo. Alicia was failed by everyone in her life. Gabriel, her father, her mother, Jean-Felix. It was an interesting read knowing tha you are reading for the person responsible.  Seeing some of the slips Theo makes was fun to sort out.
