Fantastique!!

This is the third book I read in the last two months that have been set in Paris, and I was not feeling a lag at all. I fell in love with this book at the very beginning. I love this time in history and the history of France as a whole. And the element of magic at French court was marvelous!

The characters were so engaging and the plot took many twists and turns. Camille and Sophie have such a good bond as sisters, even if they make a few mistakes. Alain is so frustrating it is hard not to get mad when you see his name. Lazare is just amazing. And Seguin is such a good villain!! I loved these characters!

The plot kept me guessing at every turn. French court is interesting as it is, but the gambling and the la magie made it so much better!

I was under the impression that the French Revolution would take place in this book, but it was only the beginning. The idea was forged and the Bastille fell, but I was expecting the whole execution of the King and Queen. But, I suppose since there are more books in this world, perhaps it will be explored later.

I loved this book and I am so happy it was just as I thought it would be. My expectations were marvelously met! There is a teeny tiny bit of insta-love, but it doesn't take away from the whole book. I am very very satisfied with this book and I would highly recommend it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I just visited Paris recently, so all the location was so fresh in my brain and I could picture everything described. The setting and stakes of the book made it hard to put down! I’d have to say that the beginning of the book was stronger than the end. We were told that the villain was bad countless times, as well as how handsome he was, how beautiful everyone was. And by the end, when the villain does awful stuff—it just felt like telling instead of showing. Some of the dialogue and plot points felt a bit cliché and scripted. Still really enjoyed it!

Even weeks after finishing this book, I still have mixed feelings. I enjoyed it but the majority of the book felt like it just dragged its feet and that made reading this sometimes feel like a task. But! I liked the characters and the setting was so vivid and beautiful to read. I do believe I will be reading the sequel because I do wish to know what happens next with all of the characters. And to read more about lavish parties, gambling, and pretty dresses.
