As someone who has lived and breathed 1984, I am keenly aware of its shortcomings. This book is a very satisfying companion to the main tale, with a perspective that enriches the source material.

It has been 30 years since I read 1984.

Julia's story only intersects with 1984 a little.  It is really a completely new story set in the time of Big Brother.

Julia is a mechanic who fixes machines in the department of truth.  She is used to being watched all the time and even likes to put on a show for the men watching the cameras.

She is trapped into becoming a spy for a government she doesn't believe in.

Characters are well developed.   The world is frightening and believable.

Told from a 3rd person point of view with Julia as the narrator.

I found Julia to be thought provoking. The ending leaves you with a knot in your stomach.

I was not prepared for all of the sex in this book.

My content warnings:
Sex
Miscarriage
Torture (very descriptive)
Death of a child
War
Blood
