Darling story! Lighthearted and cute, and it was refreshing to have a happy ending for once!

In my haste to read a romance book, I forgot to check the publisher. In solidarity with the current marketing boycott against SMP, I will withhold a formal review.

This was a wonderful roller coaster of laughter, dismay, and tears. I’ve read three books by Katherine Center this year and I have loved each story!! It’s one of those reads that once you get into it you’ll stay up all night to finish. I read a majority of the book (the last 150ish pages) in less than 24 hours. I would have stayed up all night to finish it but I wanted to wait until morning to savor it over a cup of coffee.. and it was worth the wait!

A must read if you love heartfelt women’s fiction novels.

I disliked it a lot more than I liked it. I enjoyed the sub-plot with her mom for the most part, but other than that I really just found myself angry with the FMC and most of the vibes towards women in the field.

For more of my reviews, check out my book blog at www.readingreckless.wordpress.com.

I’ll be the first one to say that I don’t usually jump on the hype train, but this book is worth the hype, literally all of it. THINGS YOU SAVE IN A FIRE by Katherine Center is about a woman firefighter who must leave her comfort zone to battle for the respect of her male peers in a small town outside Boston. She has a lot of emotional baggage she refuses to drop and a lot of walls she has built up to keep herself safe. She’s strong, she’s really good at her job, but thinks that love is stupid. So of course, the universe is going to change her mind.

One of the things that I love about Katherine Center’s novels is that she gives her heroines these massive character development arcs. With TYSIAF, Cassie is methodical, logical and stubborn. It makes me love her. She’s clearly been hurt, but she preserves. Another thing I love is how her heroines are their own champions, they can accept assistance from the men in their lives but it doesn’t feel like the men are the catalyst for change, which has always been a pet peeve of mine in a lot of formulaic romance books.

The plot is something we have all seen before, however, the way that Center writes is unique because it goes beyond your typical romantic comedy. The writing is witty and pithy and the banter back and forth between her characters is funny and ridiculous (in a good way). The interpersonal relationships explored here are realistic and the theme of forgiveness throughout the book gave me something to focus on. The romance felt secondary after all the personal development she had to do for her own happiness.

Center got me with the twist because I didn’t see it coming and I didn’t expect it at all. I’m not going to say anything more about it because YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. I fell in love with How to Walk Away and Center got me with this one as well. She’s one of the greats!

So am I going to read everything she writes from now on? Absolutely. And I recommend you do too.

What a kick-ass and heart-warming story about romantic love, family love, and self love. THANK YOU for a story about a powerful woman who doesn’t let her trauma define her!
