My God, that was long. Honestly, I’m confused how this book has done so well. I loved the writing style, the hard topics covered, and the character build out (still rooting for ya, Demon!!) but I think I was done at page 300. I had to force myself to finish the last 300 pages! I will learn to DNF one day…

I loved this book. I alternately read/listened to it, and enjoyed both formats.

I have read several Barbara Kingsolver books, and have liked all of them. And, I'm aware that many of them have flaws, minor to major, though those flaws didn't change my impressions of the books. I especially enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible, and, at the same time, understand the critique that the writing can be too wordy.

From the first to the last page, I believed every word in Demon Copperhead. It feels authentic: the characters feel real, their situations seem entirely possible and probable. At the same time, every character and every scene feels completely new to me. I had guesses about what might happen, most of which were happily incorrect. And I love that feeling.

Comparing The Poisonwood Bible to this one, I think Demon Copperhead has all the things I loved about the earlier book, and the maturity and confidence that was missing in The Poisonwood Bible. Which makes sense, given the years between the books. I'm so glad Kingsolver took on this book, and, if another one is in the works, we'll all be better for it.
