Fun little monstrous take on Home Alone. Sadly only about 15 pages long.

Probably my favourite one-shot of the 4 released. It has the same violent vibe as the original series. You really don't want to mess with the Locke family 😏 (this one features Mary Locke, her family and her sister Jean. Mary and Jean are Chamberlin's daughters)

Chamberlin appears as a ghost in the main Locke & Key series and the one-shot stories that have been released are about his family:
- Locke & Key: Small World, about his whole family and their life at Keyhouse.
- Locke and Key: Guide to the Known Keys, about his son Ian.
- Locke & Key: Grindhouse, about a break-in at Keyhouse when his daughters Mary and Jean, now adults, are living there.
- Locke and Key: Dog Days, about Mary's children.

Wow, I had forgotten how absolutely fucked up and gruesome this story was!
Read the books years ago and they're some of my favorite, so of course I had to listen to the audio version aswell.
Listening to this audio book was amazing, it made me cry and gasp out loud in shock cause they did such a good job with telling this story. 4/5 starts is only cause it was a little confusing to keep track of the characters (at times) when it was the same voice acter who had several roles, but overall it was absolutely great!

Yas! I've missed this series and this one-shot made me happy. Also made me wanna re-read the whole damn thing, but that's another story.
The women of the house in this one, though! Damn tough and just plain awesome. I wish we could see more of them or of other generations.

This review will be in two parts; one for plot and one for performance as I listened to this on audiobook.

Performance: Locke and Key was my first audiobook and it was a bit of an undertaking jumping straight into a graphic novel adapted to audio. That being said I thought it was brilliant.
The casting was spot on I did have a bit of an issue with Bode's voice at first but I got used to it eventually. I liked the added sound effects which I felt really added to the audio and helped to make clear what was happening in times where the dialogue was sparse. I don't think you need to have read the graphic novels in order to follow the plot. Despite it's complexities the audio does a good job of creating the images through sound.

Plot: I really enjoyed this series. It was brutal, funny and dark. Very dark. By the end I found myself emotionally invested in these characters and I think the way the flashbacks were done was excellent. Teasing bits and pieces of the story together until you finally get the whole picture. I liked the idea of the keys but I would have liked some more background on them and how they work. The ending was great if not a little confusing at times and I was left with quite a few questions at the end.

All in all if you're a fan of the supernatural I would recommend you give this graphic novel a go via Audible or Print. It really is a fascinating ride.

THIS IS FOR THE AUDIBLE AUDIO PLAY/BOOK ONLY!

To be perfectly honest I couldn't get into it. Listening to the audio play (is that what it is considered?) wasn't a lot of fun. The sound was echoey and not nearly as professional as other audio books I have listend.

I have read audio books that are read by a cast and those have been fine, but this is more like a play you are listening to and because you don't hear them talking about the action itself but just the sounds of the action (like a gunshot instead of them talking about raising the gun and firing) I found I couldn't get into it.

Also, even though there are some actors doing the parts, I just didn't really like any of their performance. I won't be listening to any more in this series. I wouldn't even recommend trying it. It isn't that the story idea is bad, but the way the performance works it just isn't for me.

I did give it two stars because the plot was interesting, maybe if you read it it will come out better.
