quick read. felt more like a romance with hints of mystery going on in the background. i felt interested enough in the story to keep reading but found the main character to be insufferable at times. she was all over the place throughout the book and would randomly burst into panic while everyone else around her was calm. her reactions to things just felt jarring and weird. again, felt like the romance was more of the focus than the mystery.
Moderate: Blood, Police brutality, and Sexism
Minor: Alcohol, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury, Suicide, Violence, Drug use, Death, and Forced institutionalization

It was good to very good. Would like to see where author would take her characters next.

This book was okay. I wasn't wild about the protagonist, who seemed to contradict her own personality a lot. She was supposed to be a feminist, all about the women's rights movement of Edwardian England, and it seemed out of place when she tried to seduce information out of somebody or agreed to marry a guy because it's what her late father would have wanted for her, despite the fact that the guy creeped her out. And the story itself was a bit predictable -- especially the love interest part, which was obvious from the moment the characters were introduced.

2.5 stars. Format: paperback. Formulaic and a bit anachronistic and silly, but also fun (if this genre is your jam) and a quick read.

Historical mystery with a little romance. If you like the characters when it starts you'll like the book, it's a really quick read.
