Fascinating account written through the eyes of those taking part. Nicely written but not on a par with Capote’s In Cold Blood

Like many white Americans I have a claim to some measure of Irish heritage. When I was young I had a vague idea of the troubles and a general distaste for Margaret thatcher (even though my family is sadly pretty conservative) I have endeavored to learn more about this period and history.
I think this book and author do a great job of telling the story from the viewpoint of a primarily republican stand while making little claim to either side beyond the clear abuses felt by the poorer catholic communities.

This was difficult to get into at first, but I learned a lot about Ireland and the Troubles, which was unfamiliar territory for me. The people he follows most closely in this book were fascinating each in their own way. It was disappointing that Adam’s was able to get with with so much and not have to deal with any consequences like the others did. I can’t imagine having that weight of paramilitary violence on my conscious and having someone else who lived through it with me flat out deny everything again and again like Brendan Hughes and Dolours Price had to.
Reading about how the people of Ireland essentially segregate on religious, but maybe more so on political lines, had me wondering how far off we are from our own Troubles in the US, since here we continue to widen the divide across political differences as time goes one and the dehumanization of those that don’t think as we do continues.

This book was fantastic and so was the narration. It provided a lot of context for little bits and pieces I was familiar with regarding the Irish Civil War, specifically the Troubles, and some of its main figures as well as the repercussions for people generations down the line. It’s a really nuanced book that definitively makes you reflect deeply about wrong and right and what actions we deem necessary for a larger cause (or not). Would highly recommend this book to anyone.
