I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. A history of The Troubles told narratively like a work of fiction, I couldn’t get enough of this book.

I learned so much about The Troubles from this book. Starting to before the conflict to it’s aftermath, the author did an impeccable job telling the story of the major players, the larger ideological differences, and the different narratives of this large scale conflict, and, essentially, war.

What I thought The Troubles was vs what it actually was is vastly different. This didn’t read like a dry history, but instead followed these individuals and this conflict almost like a historical fiction book. However, this was well researched and I feel like much more fully understand a complicated history.

Overall, this was a really engaging novel. If you’re a fan of shows like Derry Girls (which takes place during the later part of The Troubles), it might be a fun idea to get a better understanding of some of the jokes and background to more fully appreciate the show. Or, if you want to just learn, this is one you won’t be able to put down.

Fascinating account written through the eyes of those taking part. Nicely written but not on a par with Capote’s In Cold Blood
