Ok so this one was definitely better than the first, but I still have a bone to pick with Kestra.

This book was very enjoyable; one had the pleasure of seeing how power and magic can corrupt but with a hopeful taste of love.

This book broke my heart and by the end... ugh that end!!!... I was crying. It’s action packed and cuts deep into your heart. You feel for Kestra in ways you didn’t in the first book. This better not be it Nielsen! There better be another book on the horizon.

I feel like a part of my soul was stolen by this book. That bit of my soul was frustrated to the bitter end and mostly made me want to strangle every character in here besides Kestra. Why? You may ask based on the first book. Because I felt entirely awful for her, I mean everyone doubted and demeaned her.
"She was simply the last in a long line of people who'd trampled over me, bent me to their will, then apologized with the excuse that they had no other choice."
Pretty much sums up how I felt about every other character's opinion about Simon and Kestra. I really couldn't care less about them.
But I am glad Trina kind of redeemed herself. Good for her...
And then there's Harlyn.
SPOILERS.
Now that you've been warned...
Firstly, I would just like to say: I tried to understand her but no amount of twisting my mind made me even inclined to see her point and certainly did not make me like her. I didn't like how she seemed so perfect and stayed like that throughout, also she really liked how perfect she was let me put it that way. And I strongly dislike love triangles so this was a whole lot of torture.
Strangely though, I still feel inclined to read the next book simply because the ending made up for some of my frustration. That happens a lot with Jennifer a. Nielsen's books, especially since a majority of her strategy is getting you so overworked by a character's dilemma that you want to keep reading.

2ND Read: (MINOR SPOILERS)

It wasn't as fun as the first time but it refreshed my memory so I can finally read book three. I still find it incredibly frustrating how they treated Kestra in this book. She is literally the chosen one and all they have to say is 'I'm gonna kill you once your done with your mission' or 'wow was that all you could do? do better' It's so annoying that I started hating everyone but Simon, Basil and Trina. I mean Harlyn literally said she could've done a better job healing Simon! Excuse me miss but I don't see you giving half your soul for him! Ugh irritating BUGGG!

I do not care. I do not care. I do not like Harlyn.

She is literally like a thorn but not a metaphorical one that hurts, just a really annoying prickly one.
The way she kept tryn' to get sum when the battle is WAGING OUTSIDE THE DOOR. LIKE??? oooh and I just hate it when some character says "I'm the one for you" NO YOU NOT, I'll decide that.

Hm and Gerald...oof. His little "open your heart to her, that's all I ask."

me: oh really? Is that all why didn't ya say sooner? here lemme go do that for you..

Harlyn doesn't need his heart, she met him a few days ago. LMAO she'll get over it.

But the good thing is, the ending was as interesting and thrilling as I remember..wait no I didn't remember, that's why it was so thrilling. Now I really need the third book.
