“The truth has a habit of rising to the surface”
I always enjoy spending time with DCI Karen Pirie, she’s a brilliant well-developed character with depth that makes her feel like a real person.
And cold-cases were always an obsession of mine, so this is a combination that satisfies every time.
I was hoping Karen would catch a break in this book, but no. She still have a horrible boss, she still needs to prove herself and her work even though she is the best, with the most passion for what she does. Fingers crossed for the next installment.

Val McDermid's writing simply gets better and better. I was happy to discover her Karen Pirie series, about a head detective in a Scottish Historic Crimes Unit. I found the earlier Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series too sadistic and graphic. Pirie delivers the thrill without the gore. While McDermid's plots are often predictable, there is enough suspense and drama to keep turning the page until the end. This current case has its roots in World War II and involves the murder of a prize-winning heavy athlete in the Highland Games. And a domestic abuse case that ends in murder--and a series of ttacks on sex workers decades ago. If this is not enough, Pirie's boss wants her head on a plate. A well-structured story, with interesting Scottish slang, that will evoke good memories of Edinburgh.
Loved it. Nice to see the reasons for Karen's utter dislike of the Dog Biscuit in Book #6. This was a fascinating bit of historic cold case recreation. A body found almost perfectly preserved in a Highland peat bog along with a couple of classic Indian motorcycles leads Karen and the Mint on a search with echoes from the post war years.
This one was an audio book.
I really love Val McDermid’s settings and character development.
