I think my first love is any type of who done it, mystery, police procedure. I really enjoyed going through "the little things" that quite often "crack the case" in this book, and look forward to reading more. And of course, I am a sucker for anything set in the United Kingdom. Sometimes I do think well, maybe that came together a bit too easy - but why spoil the fun?

Cunningly knitted together!

I didn't like this book in the Karen Pirie series as much as the previous ones. I thought the ending was anticlimactic. It didn't have that signature McDermid ending, with the tension and big reveal. I also really didn't like the interactions with Pirie and her boss, they were so overtly antagonistic that it didn't seem realistic. I'll definitely continue the series, but this one wasn't a favorite.

A good plot and a likeable lead character.

This is the second DCI Karen Pirie book that I've read and I can't get enough of them now. I love the characters, the complexity of their situation and character development over time. I enjoy the writing and found the plot gripping.

3 1/2 stars. Still not sure why I didn't like this all that much. The plotting was great; really interesting mystery, but I found this a really draggy read. I'm also pretty over the whole detective whose boss hates him/her trope--it's overdone. This was OK, not the best Val McDermid has to offer
