A body is uncovered in the Highlands during a seemingly innocent attempt at recovering buried treasure. As the body is found to be over twenty years old, it is handed over to DCI Karen Pirie and her team. Working on the case takes Karen on a case which spans decades. Karen has a new boss who is even more of a match that her previous one and has to make sure to keep her slightly roguish nature in check or deal with the severe consequences. Another exciting Karen Pirie thriller and although the narrative may be a tad formulaic, it still delivers a well plotted mystery.

Val McDermid tells a great story! I love her characters, they are flawed and relatable, and hesitant to nod to authority, like the best among us! This mystery spans back to the end of WWII, and once again has Karen Pirie butting heads with her boss!
