Please read about the Nanjing Massacre/ the Rape of Nanjing before reading this book. I’m so glad this book introduced me to a portion of history I was not taught, even though it is gruesome. Nevertheless, this book has one chapter that included the most horrific scenes I’ve ever read or heard of. It’s not just about checking trigger warnings because this book isn’t just triggering— it’s traumatic.

A challenging read that one should not dive into lightly, especially when considering the heavy subject matter of war, genocide and atrocious war crimes. Our main character, Rin, has been teetering between the label of protagonist or antagonist throughout the progression of the war, and has left me questioning whether to support her actions. I am curious to see where her journey in the war continues, and appreciate the fantastical twist associated with the gods incorporated in the lore of her people. I am curious to see how and why certain people can reach the Pantheon and others cannot.

I am in pain. What was that? Who am I? I was in utter shock for the last 100 pages and I’m not sure what to think anymore. Overall I thought it was very good, but I will say that a LOT happened and part of me wonders if it was too much. 
I'm going to read the next book because I am hooked now, idk if I’ll survive. IF YOU HAVE ANY TRIGGERS DO NOT READ THIS - LITERALLY ANY
