At times intoxicating but mostly thinly veiled misogyny dressed up as magical realism, this was a nice summer read and generally well written.

For me, this book wasn't it. I think it was a great storyline, and I think it could've been great. But after a while, it going boring and it wasn't interesting to me, it was even hard for me to finish the book because I got bored. Maybe if I read it along later I could possibly enjoy it more.

Very interesting vibe - could never tell what time period it was! The vibes of awful inlaws was perfection, and gave me hives.

Once I tried to picture the magical realism through a ghibli lense I liked it more but I still struggled to finish this one

A love story, a family story, a fairy tale. I had to get used to the metaphors (fog, ghosts, fireflies, magical things) in a world that was otherwise quite normal, but once I'd got over that I really enjoyed this book. 3.5 rating on my scale.

I was drawn to this book and I kept coming back, taking my time so that it wasn't over too soon. The syrupy sweet prose sated my appetite. The atmosphere invoked that of some of my favorites novels like The Shadow of the Wind and The House of the Spirits.

However, it fell just short of the five star line. But, the impressions will live on my skin for a long time to come.
