i'm not sure that i liked the format of this book - half manuscript and half real life. however, i did enjoy the dual murder mysteries and i liked how the reveals were told all in one go as opposed to spread out throughout the book. i was quite satisfied that all the characters got the ending that they deserved - especially susan! i'm undecided on whether i'll continue this series - i'll probably watch the TV series and then make a decision.

Maybe it was because I was on vacation, but I found it hard to concentrate on this book. It didn’t help that the story within a story aspect was hard to follow when I was distracted with beach exploring. That being said, I was engaged in both stories and couldn’t put it down at the end.
I absolutely loved this! Nothing scratches the itch like a classic "Who dunnit", and this love letter to Agatha Christie is really great. In the genre of "literary-inspired murder" I actually preferred the structure of Robert Gailbreth's "The Silkworm" (superior ideas, creative concept, more likeable characters, etc.) but on the whole this was a grand old read.
If I could find one fault with the story, its that editor turned detective Susan Ryleand is kind of flat. She doesn't inspire a strong sense of comraderie with the reader, nor is she particularly likable. Honestly if I met her at a party I'd probably forget her the next day. And the fact that she is so steeped in literary knowledge surrounding murders, but is still caught monologueing at the end AND doesn't think there's a safety concern when she confronts the murderer and is shocked when they attack her AFTER SHE TURNS HER BACK ON THEM....it was a bit silly.
But on the whole, loved it.

If you like Midsommer Murders, you’ll enjoy this. Listened to audiobook. Not great for passive listening - my fault.
