5.0 stars!

I really enjoyed reading this and it's really out of my comfort zone! It's about a Black teenaged girl that is balancing her superpowers and wanting to live a normal life. It weaves in information about police brutality, school shootings, bullying, verbal and physical abuse and racism...all into one short graphic novel. I would definitely encourage others to read it and give it a chance!

This is the first book I have read that made me want to stop and find the precursor, however it seems to be a stand alone book.  If I’m wrong…please let me know!

Nubia learns who she is AFTER she accepts herself and no longer feels afraid to truly let her light shine. Her mother’s protectiveness has hid her from the world and herself.  She only knows who she because of what her parents have told her….until now.  Hey friends Quisha, Jason and Oscar help to bring out her true self as she has the support she needs to be herself.

The storyline goes fast and I wish there was more time spent covering Quentin’s death, the protests, and her back story ( especially with her mom). It was a quick coming of age story for Nubia.  So much information dropped on her in such a short period of time. The author hit on some key topics.  I was excited that she provided a space for Oscar to admit he wanted to stand up and say something but couldn’t because he was scared, not wanting to be the only one to stand up s well as caught in his trauma.  All real feelings!

i won't give this book a star rating (not yet anyway). it's illustrated beautifully but the content.......whew. it's triggering. this book should come w/ a trigger warning or a content warning-- something!
this book's content hits too close to home for me to enjoy it. art style & colours are gorgeous tho.
