About halfway through I was like “ok, why am I here? Why do I care? What’s even the plot here?” And then remembered it’s the same author as A Gentleman in Moscow, which I enjoyed. Like that book, this book is not so much about plot or purpose, but setting a scene. It paints a very specific picture of a specific time. I do not think I would have finished it if I wasn’t listening to it on audio on an 8 hour solo road trip. If you like long, meandering, and ambiance-building, you may enjoy this one. I did laugh out loud multiple times, and there was a line at the end that made me really think about life and life choices in a clever way. But it was a smidge self-indulgent with the long winded prose, and that’s why 3 instead of 4 stars for me.
