Felt like reading a child-friendly non-fiction book on the lives of mushroom people.

Beautiful artwork, weird reading, I can't explain it.

I love this so much. I got it for my girls this spring, and we've read it many, many times already. I never tire of reading it to them, and they ask for it often. The pictures are ridiculously adorable. I love that the little forest family lives simply but thoroughly enjoys life. There's just a bit of danger, just a bit of mischief, and some adventure. I love the presentation of the changing seasons. I can't wait to try some more of her books.

UPDATE, COMING BACK TO THIS REVIEW NINE YEARS LATER: I had a third baby, many years after having my girls, and he's 2 1/2 right now, and he LOVES this book! I thought the text would be way too long for him, but he asks for it again and again and loves the troll. This book will forever have a place in my heart.

This is an utterly gorgeous Scandinavian story of a little family that lives under the roots of an old pine tree and dresses in red mushroom caps. Each illustrated adventure has a gentle lesson to impart to young readers, whether it be not harming forest creatures unless they mean you harm, which forest mushrooms are safe to eat, and the importance of hard work at harvest to prepare for the long, cold winter. I wish I lived a simple life like this!

I must start out the new year by reading a book from the 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up. This is from Sweden and has a copyright date of 1910.
