I am quite disappointed. There is a lot of hype about the book, so i had a hugh expectations. I think this format is not fitting for hercule poirot; the closed space murders with known suspects is where he excels. I am not saying it is bad but it didn't give me the usual rushs.

A masterpiece, as always

Once again, a masterpiece at work... you look left, you look right, you are sure who the murderer is; only to be shocked in the end! Highly recommend!

My sixth Agatha Christie and one of the best! After Death On The Nile and Murder On The Orient Express the three that followed it were a tier below in terms of quality and enjoyment, and I worried that the rest might be too. I am happy to be wrong!

The ABC Murders departs from Christie's typical format in a refreshing and modern way. Rather than the typical country-house setting, or enclosed space (boat, train, island etc), this book deals with a serial killer striking across the country. In our opening chapter, Poirot receives a note from "ABC", telling him to expect trouble in Andover on a certain date. Indeed, a woman named Mrs Ascher is found dead there, with an "ABC" placed on her (a railway guide that would have been very familiar to Christie's 1930s readers). Poirot is stumped, and inevitably another note comes in the post, and another body is found, this time Betty in Bexhill. You can see where this is going!

SpoilerAs I mentioned up top, this narrative feels very modern and much more sinister than the cosy country mysteries Christie is known for. The book leads you down the garden path, so to speak, as to the identity of the killer, and there was an unexpected twist that was a complete surprise. That's a mark of a good mystery, in a book that was so compelling as not to need a twist at all! That's why they call her "Agatha Christerie, Queen of Mystery".

I got this for Christmas 2023. I absolutely love the cover! At a glance it depicts a typical ABC guide, but it has an inset of a very intriguing and artful painting, which is as strange as it is sinister.
