This was a great way to experience where the inspiration of The Bard: William Shakespeare came from. Chaucer’s tragedy poem is where the word “tragedy” has been used first and it is nice to see how others develop upon it. It is also nice to see how Homer and Ovid inspired Chaucer and set the theme of this romantic epic poem.
The backdrop of the poem is simpler to the Iliad (the battle of the Trojan War) but it focuses more inward upon a Trojan’s prince, the younger brother of Hector, and a higher born Trojan lady Criseyde. I am looking forward to seeing the motivation Chaucer has been to others through-out history.

Normally I like epic poems. I love the Aeneid, and the Luisiads and the Odyssey. Probably this is a good poem as well. Problem is, I couldn't find it in translation. Best I could do is find an incomprehensible poem in Middle English with some words translated next to it and some textual explanations underneath. So I was constantly taken out of it trying to understand. If you're a scholar, fine, but I just wanted to read something entertaining.
I really enjoed this translation of the book. It was witty and I had so much fun reading the story of Troilus and Criseyde.
This was just...painful to get through. A lot of the stuff I've read the last few months is for my honors seminars but this was by far the worst. I was just annoyed, literally the whole time. I guess it was just one of those books that didn't click with me.
well that took an inordinately long amount of time. i love criseyde, protect her at all costs
I only read parts of this during a class. It wasn't my favorite, but it was worth reading to get a different perspective on the Trojan War.
