I'm not gonna lie - I feel really, really bad giving a low rating to such a classic.

I watched the film ages ago, as a teenager, and considering that I've always been a big fan of storylines about rebellion it came out as a big surprise that I didn't like it. I thought maybe I wasn't mature enought to get it and I decided to read the book this year. Well, perhaps I still am too childish to appreciate the greatness of it.
I feel like the book aged really badly, it seems really pretencious and gushy. The female characters are treated horribly by the author. Also, I really don't like when books put metaphores right in front of you trying to make you feel like you came up with conclusions yourself. I'm not a huge fan of the kind of humour that was used in it as well.
Sigh. The book didn't make me contemplate the sense of metal health, revolts and didn't make me feel any kind of emotion. Obviously, except being happy and relieved to finally finish it.

On the positive side I have to admit it's really easy to read. (I guess that explains why it came out as such a big success.)

oh man, this was rough. the characterization and descriptions were top notch and my heart hurt a lot for these characters. the second half was especially painful knowing a lot about the history of mental illness and the treatment of it at the time of kesey publishing the book.

i enjoy stories of rebellion against the society and this was a textbook example of it. it was a masterpiece. it's unfathomable to me that this is still challenged and banned from libraries in america.

i've loved the film adaptation for so many years and i was very nervous getting to this, i even dreaded it for a while, but i'm glad that this lived up to the film. of course, it's very polarizing to many, but i see this as a firm favourite myself.

Complicated feelings about this one.

Two sides to this coin:
Side 1, of fascinating imagery, unique allusions, and thoughtfully interwoven symbolism and counterculture commentary
Side 2, of ignorant portrayals & profiling, a stagnant & repetitive plot line, and every character as stereotyped & “morally-grey” (sure, there’s some human depth & realism, but is in need of a purpose for the modern reader to get behind, leading to a lackluster reading experience).

Interesting to discuss and process, yet not without those sourly out-dated portrayals if you ask me, regardless of symbolic representation. Namely, misogyny.
