Thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are diverse and well written and beautifully developed. I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the book and was desperate to get to the end and know it all. Unfortunately the last couple of chapters knocked a fifth star off for me, it felt rushed and betrayed the fantastic character development we'd seen throughout the book, finished feeling a bit deflated after the journey I'd been on with the protagonist. Still a good read and would recommend. Content warning for child abuse, violence, sexual violence, gaslighting.

This was a highly anticipated read, & it exceeded my expectations!

𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 :
- Alice Feeney
- Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth
- Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
- Character driven stories
- dark themes
- dual pov
- neurodivergent main character

𝙈𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 :
Nugent writes with exactly the right tone - painting a picture of darkness & humour, despair & hope, of empathy & optimism. The plot was intricate, with well placed twists.

Despite her tragic upbringing & blunt exterior, Sally manages to become a resilient, capable, quirky adult. She is a character you can’t help but root for.

The audiobook was impeccable. Sally’s point of view was narrated perfectly & the addition of the interview audio recordings were so authentic.

While the ending was a tiny bit underwhelming, Sally & her story deserve 5 stars, one of my most memorable reads of the year. I’ll be thinking about Sally and her strangeness for a long time.

**the topics discussed in this book are heavy - I definitely recommend checking trigger warnings.

Thank you @netgally for the opportunity to read this book for the paperback rerelease!

This was a fantastic thriller! I went in thinking it was going to be a particular type of book but it surprised me again and again with it's plot turns and depth. There are a lot of intense themes that are fantastically dealt with and made for an engaging discussion with my book club. The characters are so well drawn especially Sally herself who I was rooting for from the start, celebrating her wins and sharing her frustrations. The only thing that brought the book down for me was the ending
I left with such a sense of sadness that all the progress Sally had made had been undone, I suppose it was a realistic ending but I was hoping for something with a bit more hope!

I think it is absolutely a must to go into this book blind so will refrain from providing too many details. However, briefly, this story centers on Sally Diamond, who is quirky and takes things quite literally due to her inability to identify jokes and assess social cues. When Sally accidentally does something unusual but horrific, she attracts the attention of the media and police.

Upon starting this book, I could not put it down!!! It was quite the page turner, particularly the first 90% of the book. It was full of intrigue, rapid story progression, character development, and even humor. I liked the format of the dual timelines and perspectives as well. Sally’s character was well crafted and I felt tremendous sympathy for Sally. There were instances though where I found her behavior infuriating. What truly detracted from my positive reading experience was the completely disappointing ending. I found it rather abrupt and lackluster.

I would still recommend the book but please be sure to check out content warnings as it covers heavy subject matter.

I found this book a real page-turner. It dealt with some tawdry issues and wasn’t emotionally easy to read.
+ I found the MC believable; she was flawed, fallible and multidimensional
+ the subtext of nature versus nurture was interesting
+ the story itself was sadly credible
- some of the more peripheral characters were less credible. Some characters really didn’t seem to serve any function and were dropped from the story for huge numbers of pages.
- I just didn’t love the ending… it all wrapped up too quickly. For example the podcaster was an interesting angle, which was then just finished very  abruptly. Amanda Herron having the last chapter seemed silly because she wasn’t a character who’d been developed.

Trigger warning: the book is troublesome in its covering of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse of children and their long life impact.

Could not put this book down from the start. I read it in 3 days. Grips you and can’t stop reading. It was quite disturbing . Adult reading only. I would have given this 5/5 but the ending let it down for me. However, I would recommend this book. The manager at Waterstones recommended this to me after reading Richard Osman books, something a little alternative!
