I hadn't expected the book to unfold like it did, and I'm pleasantly surprised! I really loved Sally's characterization, she feels very real and complex and nuanced, and I felt the same about pretty much most other characters in this book.
I've seen some complaints about the ending, suggesting that it ruins Sally's character growth or that it renders the book pointless. I don't see it that way. (Spoilers ahead.)For one, healing is absolutely never linear. Real people regress and get back up again constantly. I found myself relating to Sally a lot, as someone whose trauma makes them not dissimilar to Sally. I experienced a very similar regression when Covid hit too, due to a perceived betrayal as well.
Also, I feel that those who consider Sally's "regression" so negatively are failing to do what she's taught herself to do: to put themselves in other's shoes. Her coping mechanism, the piano, became connected to her father, turning her primary means of comfort into a trigger for buried trauma that she hasn't unpacked because no one thinks she should. I'd be surprised if she didn't regress at that, especially as she spent 40 years living a very different life and her recovery was mismanaged from her youth! But she has community and she has people who care about her enough to try their best to help her. I believe the point is that she will have ups and downs but will, ultimately, be okay thanks to the support of those around her. After all, she did send that bear to her niece, and I feel that implies that she does get back out there eventually. Maybe I'm just a simpering optimist, but that's my interpretation.
Also, shit, I really get personal in my reviews sometimes. I just often hope that my own life's unusual circumstances can offer a different POV to the scant few people who may read these.

This was such a good read for me.
I listened to this and everything that happens in this story is just kind of wild.
It is dark, disturbing twisted and just a downright interesting story.
Sally's father passes and disposes of him.
She doesn't let anyone know what had happened because she was just doing what was asked of her father.
AS the story goes on, she is slowly unraveling pieces of her past and where she really came from.

I went into this book completely blind and absolutely loved it!
