This is the best book I've read so far this year. It reminds me of La Casa en Mango Street with the vignette-style writing. The story is gripping, yet so ordinary for people from the Dominican Republic traveling to America for a new life. I tore through this book with the engaging characters and the beautiful writing. Angie Cruz is a master of her craft.

I purposely went into this book blindly. It was just okay.

Set in the 1960s, Dominicana follows the story of 15 year old Ana, who has grown up in the Dominican Republic countryside. Her family agrees for her to marry Juan, who is living in NYC. Ana moves to be with him and alone, unable to speak English, and having no family or friends- she must endure a life she had never imagined.
.
This is such an incredible coming of age story, and about the immigrate experience. I fell in love with Ana and her innocence- backing her to make choices and find her way in the new world she had found herself in. Definitely a powerful story and a must read if you enjoy literary fiction.
