I honestly don't even really know what to say. An absolute triumph in every way.
The Book Thief is about many things: it's about the power of words, about war, its cogs and consequences, about World War II in specific, about civilians and quiet resistance, about friendship, about family and community, about life, death and existence, but mainly, it's about humans.
As such, it is funny, bleak, lighthearted and unbelievably heavy, hopeful and hopeless, without the slightest tonal whiplash. The writing is striking, unique, and masterful, relaying this ridiculously ambitious story of contradictions without somehow ever becoming preachy, stilted or boring even for a second.
Beautiful, haunting book. Recommended to everyone.

What a book.
'The Book Thief' had me giggling, laughing, sobbing, crying, angry, upset, smiling, frowning and a whole host of other emotions!
Liesel Meminger, what a young girl. she goes through so much yet is so strong in her times of hardship and war. She goes through things that you and I as readers will never feel even a glimmer of. I feel that she is a character who brings hope and sunshine to a lot of the other character's days, such as Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Rudy Steiner, Frau Holtzapfel, Ilsa Hermann and of course, Max Vandenburg.
What an array of character's with varying personalities, from Rosa Hubermann's sharp frown to Hans Hubermann's laughing eyes, to Rudy Steiner's mischievous ask for a kiss.
I fell in love with ALL of the characters. ALL but one. The Führer.
This book really made me angry about what went on at that time in history and how it stole so many childhood's.
Brilliant read, such a sad ending but worthwhile. I will definitely re-read this book in the future.
