Though the world building and philosophy continue to be excellent I felt like there was less tension in this one and thus, less plot momentum. Several times I had to stop and take a running start at it again. All good, just not as tight as previous installments.

Cast In Sorrow – Michelle Sagara – This is part two of a really long trip to do the impossible, so it’s just another day at the office for Kaylin. Severn has a manhunt to finish and a weapon to repair. The Consort keeps falling out of sync with the rest of the world requiring Kaylin to retrieve her. Teela’s 11 childhood friends are all giving the Green and the last Hallonine a run for their existence. And Kaylin’s familiar is hitting critical instability and critical importance to fixing the gaping wound in the Green and restoring the 11 lost children. Nightshade’s gamble is either going to get everyone killed or resolve the defining tragedy in more than one power player’s life. There is no one who does the long game better than Michelle Sagara! Happy Reading!

When I started reading this book I didn't realize it would be a love story, and one that was entirely unexpected. As usual Michelle Sagara has pulled together a narrative that deals with some of my favorite elements of this series--words, stories, and what makes us who we are. What was unexpected was the character development. We learned more about Teela and Nightshade (and some about Severn) than ever before. Plus our intrepid heroine finally had to make choices about power and her past entirely on her own without any magical intervention forcing her hand. Big steps. We also leave the story with a host of new possibilities that make me excited to see what happens next. There was the usual Kaylin muddling through solutions that I had to re-read a few times to understand but even that wasn't so bad.

Note: Also I love the cover.

Such a great book, loved all the events and how it helped in the end, and she finally named her familiar, kinda, by telling him a story! And yeah, can't wait for Cast in Flame!!

*First read August 31st 2013*
Oh, such an amazing book, though I wonder when small dragon will get a either mortal name, or an immortal nickname. And can't wait for Flame!

Can't wait to see how her and her familiar continue to go along, and I missed Marcus and Bellusdeo. Nightshade has his own personal motives, but I get the feeling Kaylin's well of patience with him is bone dry, at this point.

After surprisingly reaching The West March in one piece, Kaylin hopes that the rest of her journey will go smoother. Not so much. The eleven Barrani children that were at the telling with Teela as a child have other ideas. I love this series, but I have to say that this was my least favorite, so I gave it 4 stars instead of the usual 5. The talk of the green got a little mind numbing at times, but the overall story was good.

It closed the arc of the previous book and I suspect it opened a new arc.

I enjoyed it.
